The Benefits Of Establishing A Dental Home For Your Child

A “dental home” is the dental office where your child receives most of their care as they grow, and also refers to the relationship that your child builds with their dentist over time. Bringing your child to the same dental practice from an early age has a lot of benefits:

  • Kids become comfortable with dentistry – When kids see the same dentist from a young age, they’ll become much more comfortable with the process. Your child will be less likely to develop dental fear, anxiety, or phobia in the future, and may even start looking forward to their dental visits!
  • Track their oral health and development – Your child’s mouth is always growing and changing. Routine six-month visits with the same dentist will help you track their oral growth and development, identify any potential issues, and get the care your child needs if their pediatric dentist notices an issue.
  • Get personalized tips and recommendations – At Potrero Hill Dental, we’re all about patient education. At every visit, your child’s pediatric dentist will provide both you and your little one with personalized tips about how to prevent cavities, maintain great oral hygiene, and keep their smiles healthy as they grow.
  • Peace of mind when emergencies happen – Whether they slip and fall while playing, have a toothache, or break a tooth while eating, you can trust your child’s pediatric dentist to provide the emergency care they need in a familiar, welcoming environment.

At Potrero Hill Dental, we’re proud to be the dental home for kids of all ages from all around San Francisco. If you’re looking for a new pediatric dentist for your child, give us a call to book your little one’s first visit right away!

Our Pediatric Dentistry Services

Checkups and teeth cleanings

Six-month checkups are at the heart of everything we do at Potrero Hill Dental. With routine oral exams and X-rays, your child’s dentist can look for signs of cavities and gum disease, check on their oral development, and make sure their teeth are healthy.

We offer kid-friendly teeth cleanings, too. At Potrero Hill Dental, we use Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) with EMS Airflow technology to provide teeth cleanings. EMS Airflow is an alternative to traditional dental cleaning tools. It uses a stream of air, water, and a fine powder to clean your child’s teeth, which makes the experience much more comfortable!

Fluoride treatments and dental sealants

Fluoride treatments are a great way to reduce your child’s risk of cavities. In this procedure, their dentist will apply a thin layer of fluoride to their teeth, then rinse it away after a few minutes. Fluoride helps attract minerals to their teeth, strengthening them and reducing the risk of cavities.

Dental sealants are also a good option for preventing cavities. In this procedure, your child’s dentist will apply a thin layer of transparent resin to their rear teeth in liquid form. Then, they will harden it with a UV light. This forms a strong barrier that protects their enamel from food particles, bacteria, and acid.

Restorative care

Even with great at-home oral hygiene and routine visits to Potrero Hill Dental, kids can still get cavities. Our dental team is here to help with tooth-colored fillings and crowns. We can restore your child’s teeth, protect their oral health, and make sure they can smile without pain or discomfort. We even offer sedation options to keep your little one feeling comfortable during their visit!

Orthodontic evaluations

At Potrero Hill Dental, routine oral exams and X-rays allow our team to keep a close eye on your child’s jaw development. At each visit, our dentists will look out for any potential orthodontic health issues including bite problems, a narrow palate, crowded or crooked teeth, and much more.

This is critical for your child’s oral health and development. If your child’s dentist notices an issue with their jaw growth pattern or the alignment of their teeth, we can refer your child to a specialist for early interceptive orthodontics. Early intervention can help reduce or even eliminate the need for your child to get orthodontic treatment in the future.

Myofunctional therapy

Did you know that lots of jaw development issues in kids are caused by poor oral habits as your child grows? These habits are called “orofacial myofunctional disorders” or “OMDs” for short.

For example, some kids may develop a “reverse swallow,” where they push their tongue against their front teeth to swallow, rather than pushing it upward against the roof of their mouth. Over time, this can lead to issues like a high, narrow palate, crowded teeth, and much more.

At Potrero Hill Dental, we can help. We offer myofunctional therapy to help kids with orofacial myofunctional disorders. Our team will use a combination of physical therapy, exercises, and other techniques to correct unhealthy oral habits and get your child’s oral development back on track.
